CENTRE OF RESEARCH ON SMART MECHATRONIC SECURING SYSTEMS, SITES AND INTERVENTION (CERMISO)
Aim of the Centre
The research centre was created for the optimization of equipment of the type 'Smart Autonomous Mini-System for Air Displacement (MIADA)' with direct applications in security and safety of sites, and allowing a rapid intervention in isolated places where hazards occur. Currently, all over the world, the study of research and development of MIADA type systems is in full swing; these systems are known to the general public under names such as: 'UAV'(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), 'Drones', 'Multicopters', or, in the military field: 'RPA' ( Remotely Piloted Aircraft, etc.
Nowadays, the technological evolution has allowed the reduction of these devices to extremely small dimensions compared to their predecessors, reaching weights from a few hundred grams to about 5 kg, and a lift of 1/5 of its own weight as the payload. The development and miniaturization of computer systems also meets the optimization of these systems, making possible not only a flight autonomy of 60-90 minutes, but also their endowment with artificial intelligence to perform certain tasks without operator intervention. The extremely high degree of accessibility, the high speeds (sometimes exceeding 20 km/h), and the predominantly straight aerial displacement allow this equipment to be the most comfortable and fast security and intervention systems. The particularly high load capacity makes it possible to mount on such equipment very large varieties of sensors both for data collection and for its own security and functionality.
Basically, in the centre, the R&D activity will be carried out according to the following guidelines:
1 - Integration of smart autonomous mechatronic systems in space and environmental security
2 - Optimization of smart airborne autonomous mechatronic systems
3 - Secure information transmission technology
4 - Development of micro-systems controlled by artificial intelligence
5 - Development of artificial intelligence for automatic data processing in order to prevent disasters and accidents.
6 - Development of anti-hacking security solutions and algorithms for autonomous airborne systems.
7 - Hardware and software solutions for optimizing energy consumption to increase the endurance and flight autonomy of airborne mechatronic systems
The results of the centre will be mainly dedicated to the field of information and communication technology, space and security. The unification of the concepts of UAV and RPA in a single MIADA type equipment endowed with artificial intelligence falls with great success in the area of integrated space applications generating a new product with a wide range of applicability in almost all fields. The proposed new surveillance concept with MIADA-type equipment organized in flight in formation, fully autonomous and self-powered without interrupting the security process itself, can make a real revolution as an innovative methodology and technology in cross-border combat of terrorism, organized crime, trafficking illegal possession of goods and persons. This is because large areas can be covered, 24 hours a day, with a relatively small number of equipment that does not require operator intervention except in cases where the actual intrusion is reported.
An increase in the security of the borders supervised by MIADA type equipment is expected both during the day and at night. Thus, a single operator will be able to monitor large cross-border areas, in real time, dynamically and very precisely, any unauthorized crossing being signaled immediately.
The complexity and modular concept of such a system makes it possible for this equipment to be used in almost all areas of interest in most fields such as health, transport, agriculture, energy, hydrotechnics, forestry, education, and even academia.
The CERMISO centre is equipped with processing and measurement equipment dedicated to the targeted field, facilitating the production of assemblies or elements with complex configurations and high-fine execution possibilities.
The centre generates new services of modern and innovative type, some of them being at this moment in the study and testing phase even in the highly developed countries. Big companies such as Google and Amazon are studying the possibility of delivering products at home by air with low costs and high response speed. Thus, both for simple purchases and supplies of products intended to save lives, they will be available on this communication channel, thus having extremely short response times. In our country, one of the main users and beneficiaries of the services offered by such equipment is agriculture, one of the fields that has recently seen a strong growth and development so that determining the stage of crops of any kind by scanning and aerial mapping becomes mandatory for ensuring a proper growth yield in the field. Furthermore, reducing the intake of adjacent chemicals such as chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and fungicides is fundamentally associated with the enormous amount of data that can be quickly measured via a complex video and parametric scan. Forestry, in turn, can benefit from a large increase in both the production yield itself and the security and control against acts of vandalism. No less important is the use of MIADA equipment individually or in formations for securing any kind of large spaces - regardless of their type and utility - including interstate borders. The range of uses and possibilities of such equipment will be constantly growing so that it will most likely cover almost completely both the industrial, and the private area.>
The contribution of the research centre to the increase of the research performance and the intensification of the international collaborations
The CERMISO research centre of INCDMTM will optimally focus and capitalize on the high level scientific and technical potential in Romania. The stated goal is to increase the quality and efficiency of R&D activity carried out at INCDMTM Bucharest and the quality of services offered to SMEs with a decisive role in the development of a knowledge-based economy.
The research centre creates a basis for hiring research specialists at the international level and connecting to European projects such as the European Union Research and Technological Development Program HORIZON 2020.
The R&D infrastructure developed through the proposed project is intended to stimulate R&D projects with direct applicability in the economy and to develop cooperation between INCDMTM and the productive sector, in priority areas such as: Space and Security, Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Bioeconomy, Economics and Health.
At the same time it will allow the efficient collaboration with the university education due to the complexity of the possibly accessible directions mentioned above, allowing the development of some demonstrative and practical activities that will constitute a pole of attraction for the young researchers.
Thus, INCDMTM Bucharest will also contribute to the increase of the quality and to the diversification of the educational act by providing professional training programs for master's / doctoral students in partnership with universities from all over the country.
Degree of Novelty
The special novelty of these proposed systems consists in the absolute mobility of access to the location, the possibility to deliver a high speed intervention, the artificial intelligence that allows a high quality decision making and the real time transmission of all useful information to the operator.
In the near future, formations of such equipment could form an effective shield against unwanted events and situations in almost all areas of everyday life.
The possibility of manufacturing such equipment in our country opens wide possibilities for selling it both in the country and abroad. There will also be opportunities for cooperation with European producers in the field, in order to optimize production costs and the quality of components. The results correlated with the optimization solutions will involve in the production process both small and medium enterprises creating new fields of activity and even new concepts and standards not only in security and intervention but also in other fields where applications with this type of equipment. Moreover, the involvement of the MECHATREC Cluster (of which INCDMTM is part) is already present through the partnership agreements already concluded for this field as well as the involvement of the CERMISO center were made with great enthusiasm, intuiting the future offered by this partnership. This provides a first platform for launching MIADA equipment on the Romanian and European market, as a result of the R&D activity that takes place in the CERMISO Centre.
The primary beneficiaries will be in the first stage those in the fields dedicated to security and guarding of objectives and those dedicated to interventions in special cases. But in a second possible stage, in a very short time, the number of beneficiaries will increase rapidly covering other areas such as health, transport, agriculture, energy, hydrotechnics, forestry, education, and academia
